WHAT: Barbershop screening to increase awareness and early detection of prostate cancer

DETAILS: Mary Bird Perkins – Our Lady of the Lake Cancer Center will perform screenings in its mobile unit. This screening is for men age 50 and older who do not have a doctor or have not been screened in the past 12 months. The screening includes a PSA (prostate-specific antigen) blood test and a digital rectal exam performed by a doctor. Clinicians from the Cancer Center will be on hand to answer questions about the risks and benefits of prostate screening.

DETAILS: The program for adults will feature Dr. Margo Abadie, clinical director for the Baton Rouge Crisis Intervention Center, along with crisis line coordinator Sarah Backstrom discussing suicide prevention, intervention and how the community can become involved. Members of a suicide survivors group will share their stories and experiences. A question-and-answer session will follow.
