WHAT: Alzheimers Caregivers Support Group

WHEN: 1 p.m. Monday, Sept. 18

WHERE: EBR Jones Creek Regional Branch Library, 6222 Jones Creek Road

DETAILS: Family members and friends can share experiences and information for coping with Alzheimers and dementia. Dianne Miller will lead the discussion. Alzheimers Services of the Capital Area sponsors this meeting, which is free and open to the public.


WHAT: Free yoga class

WHEN: 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 20

WHERE: EBR Bluebonnet Regional Branch Library, 9200 Bluebonnet Blvd.

DETAILS: Experience yoga with instructor Vanessa Parks. The class will continue on the third Wednesday of each month. Please bring your yoga mat or towel and water. All levels are welcome.

Epilepsy group 

WHAT: Epilepsy support group meeting

WHEN: 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 20

WHERE: EBR Bluebonnet Regional Branch Library, 9200 Bluebonnet Blvd., Baton Rouge

DETAILS: The group is open to adults with epilepsy/seizure disorders, their family members, friends, caregivers and anyone who would like to share their experiences and support those who are managing seizures. Parents of children with epilepsy are also encouraged to attend. Adult topics can come up at meetings that may be inappropriate for young children. Parental discretion is advised.

Safety seat checks

WHAT: Free child car seat inspections

WHEN: 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 23

WHERE: Benny’s Car Wash, 8370 Siegen Lane; Lexlee’s Kids, 10245 Siegen Lane, Suite B; State Police Troop A, 17801 Highland Road; Alliance Safety Council, 1099 N. Rieger Road; Family Road of Greater Baton Rouge, 323 E. Airport Drive; Central Fire Department, 11646 Sullivan Road.

DETAILS: Professionals will be on hand to ensure that child safety seats are properly installed and help make any needed changes. The car seat checks are offered by the Louisiana Passenger Safety Task Force, in association with University Medical Center New Orleans. 

ALS fundraiser

WHAT: Donna Britt Day benefiting the ALS Association Louisiana/Mississippi chapter

WHEN: Noon to 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 1

WHERE: White Oak Plantation and Farm, 17660 George O'Neal Road, Baton Rouge

TICKETS/INFO: $25; $10 for children.

DETAILS: Britt is a longtime anchor on WAFB television, who announced in July that she has amyotrophic lateral sclerosis or ALS. Proceeds from the event, which will include food prepared by chef John Folse, go to the ALS Association Louisiana-Mississippi Chapter’s services, which include assistance with health care navigation; support groups for pALS and their caregivers; a durable medical equipment and assistive technology loan closet; a multidisciplinary clinic; outreach to identify new patients; education and awareness; and advocacy efforts on a state and national level.
