  • WHEN: All donors who donate through May 19 will be entered to win a pair of two day passes to Bayou Country Superfest, May 23-24, at Tiger Stadium. One winner will be pulled on May 20. Donors who donate on “Taylor Tuesday” — May 19 only — are also entered to win a pair tickets for Taylor Swift’s May 22 concert, also at Tiger Stadium.

Donors can visit unitedbloodservices.org the day of their donation and click on the “Health History Questionnaire” to complete the interview portion of their donation online. Print your “Fast track donation ticket” and bring it with you. Donors must be at least 16 years old, weigh at least 110 pounds and be in good health. Additional height/weight requirements apply to donors 22 and younger, and donors who are 16 years of age must have signed permit form, available at the website, from a parent or guardian. Donors receive a free cholesterol test and can earn points, which can be redeemed for movie tickets, pizza, shopping cards and more at bloodhero.com. A photo ID is required to donate.

  • WHEN: Saturday, May 23. One-mile run starts at 8 a.m.; 5K starts at 8:30 a.m. Registration starts at 7 a.m.

  • DETAILS: The fundraiser for St. Jude Children’s Hospital starts in the heart of downtown at the Galvez Plaza and circles around Arsenal Park and the State Capitol then back down the main strip.


  • WHAT: Blood Pressure 4 Kids Fishing Derby to raise awareness of blood pressure issues in children and the need for increased screenings
  • WHEN: 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, May 23. Registration starts at 8 a.m., the derby starts at 9 a.m.
  • WHERE: Cabelas Pond, 2200 W. Cabela’s Parkway, Gonzales
  • COST: $10
  • DETAILS: There will be a kids fishing derby, music, lunch plates and other family activities. Nurses will be doing free blood pressure screenings for youngsters ages 3 and up. The nurses will also be able to answer questions and will provide educational materials. Prizes will be awarded for the largest fish by age group.
