The Krewe de Canaille held its 30th and final Mardi Gras ball on Feb. 24 at La Poussiere Cajun Dancehall in Breaux Bridge.

Reining over the festivities was Queen Janine "The Dancing Machine" Dugas, who was presented to the cheers of the crowd.

Following the queen's entrance, 30 years of former kings and queens were introduced.

While ball Captain Jim Dugas kept order, jester Brenda Trahan entertained all with her shenanigans. Emcee for the affair was Chris Trahan.

Queen Dugas founded the Krewe de Canaille in 1987 with only 30 members. The original theme, "Tacky with Umbrellas," eventually changed to a more Cajun theme. The beautifully decorated umbrellas remain to this day.

Originally, the ball was held at Randol's in Lafayette until the membership grew to 200, where its stand today.

"The only two requirements for membership have always been a love for Cajun dancing or just being 'Canaille!'" says the queen.
