Baton Rouge cook /blogger/radio personality Jay Ducote is frying things up on Travel Channel.
The Ducote-hosted pilot for “Deep Fried America” will debut at 12:30 p.m. Saturday, June 25 (cable Channel 55).
Ducote, 34, the runner-up last year on Season 11 of “Food Network Star,” had made a three-minute version of the pilot for that show’s Aug. 16 finale. Food Network’s parent company, Scripps Networks, also owns Travel Channel, Cooking Channel and HGTV. Scripps saw a better fit for Ducote’s project on the Travel Channel, and approached him about doing a full, half-hour pilot, which production company Magnetic shot in Austin in November, a news release says.
In the pilot, Ducote will comb the Texas city, turning up a delicately deep-fried tempura-battered burger, a deep-fried lamb meatloaf sandwich, Thanksgiving dinner fried into a ball and a deep-fried donut topped with fried chicken.
Travel Channel won’t decide if they want a full season of the show until after it airs and viewer and other data is collected, Ducote says.
“Watch the show every time it airs between June 25 and July 4. Set your DVR to record it. Tell your friends to watch it, too. Come to my viewing party at The Varsity in Baton Rouge on June 25 starting at noon. Post about it on social media and tag #deepfriedamerica, @travelchannel and @jayducote. We’ll be active on social media as always, ready to answer any questions you might have and engage in conversation,” Ducote says.
