Review: Boxing drama ‘Southpaw’ punches new life into familiar scenario _lowres

The Louisiana Film Society, Louisiana International Film Festival and the Weinstein Company are presenting a free pre-release screening of the drama “Southpaw.” The screening is at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 22, at Cinemark Perkins Rowe.

Directed by Antoine Fuqua (“Training Day,” “The Replacement Killers”), “Southpaw” features Jake Gyllenhaal as boxing champ Billy “The Great” Hope. Rachel McAdams co-stars as Hope’s wife; actor-rapper Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson portrays the champ’s soon to be ex-manager; and Oscar-winner Forest Whitaker plays the retired fighter who helps the struggling Hope.

Registration for admission to the screening is at Facebook page facebook.com/Lifilmfest. VIP seating begins at 6:30 p.m. General admission seating begins at 7 p.m.
