The Kids’ Orchestra will present its “Honors Orchestra Winter Concert” at 4 p.m. Saturday in the Christian Life Fellowship Sanctuary, 2037 Quail Drive.
Admission is free.
The orchestra’s fourth annual winter concert highlights the skills acquired by participants of the Kids’ Orchestra after-school program, which begins each September. Due to the rapid and exponential growth of the program, this is the first year Honors Orchestra will perform in three sections.
The Honors Orchestra is composed of 200 children selected from the 750 kindergarten through fifth grade students participating in Kids’ Orchestra’s after-school music program. Honors Orchestra members are selected based on ability and are tiered into three performing groups: First Chair Orchestra, Second Chair Orchestra and Novice Orchestra. Students from 24 local public, private and charter elementary schools will be represented at the concert.
Students in the Honors Orchestras range from fourth-year veterans who joined the program in its inception to first-year children who just received their first instrumental instruction this September.
The concert will feature various performances by Kids’ Orchestra’s Honors Orchestras and the Kids’ Choir, along with solos and duets performed by selected students.
“It’s amazing what happens when we put an instrument in the hands of young children and place them in an ensemble,” says Jody Hanet, Kids’ Orchestra executive director. “With the wonderful training they receive in Kids’ Orchestra, they are transformed into budding musicians performing in a well-rounded, cohesive orchestra!”
The evening also will include a special presentation by the Kids’ Orchestra Faculty Orchestra of selected members of its teaching staff, including members of the Baton Rouge Symphony, as well as masters and doctoral candidates and professors from both LSU and Southeastern Louisiana University.
In addition to the Honors Orchestra Winter Concert, Kids’ Orchestra will host six additional local performances at participating schools in a Winter Showcase Series to provide performance opportunities for all 750 students in the after-school program.
Although admission is free, attendees are encouraged to make a $5 donation to the 2014 Holiday Raffle. Prizes include a 32-inch flat screen HD TV, an Xbox One bundle and Beats by Dre headphones. The winners will be drawn at the event.
