Since 2011, Roy King has directed the Golden Band from Tigerland. Looking back, he is still surprised at how he landed the gig.
“It’s one of those situations where you can say you were in the right place at the right time,” he says, laughing. “I’d never planned on directing a college band. I never dreamed I would one day be the Tiger Band’s director.”
The office was once occupied by Frank Wickes. In 1996, King came back to LSU as a graduate assistant. After a series of staffing shifts, King took over as band director.
With the kickoff of the 2015 football season, King will now enter his 20th year in the band’s administration. Though band director is something he never imagined doing, he has no regrets.
“The band is the reason I get out of bed every morning,” he said.
