Champions of Service honors were bestowed on eight Louisianans, one service club and one corporation by Volunteer Louisiana and Lt. Gov. Billy Nungesser at an April 18 gala at the Capitol Park Museum.
Local honorees included Capital Area Champion Lois Rector, a volunteer with the Knock Knock Children’s Museum, and AmeriCorps Champion Jeanie Pizzalato, a volunteer with Life of a Single Mom. Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Louisiana, which is headquartered here, received the Corporate Volunteer Champion.
Also receiving awards were Northwest Champion retired Air Force Lt. Col. John Storey, who volunteers in the Shreveport/Bossier City area and has volunteered extensively with disaster recovery in Denham Springs, Texas and Puerto Rico in the wake of recent floods; Greater New Orleans Champion Barbara Jo Pease, a founder and volunteer with Louisiana Youth Services; Southwest Champions Acadiana Homeschool Key Club; Southeast/Northshore Champion Nadine Robertson, founder of the nonprofit Visionary Philanthropic Media Arts Foundation; and Senior Corps Champions Teresa Floyd and Lillie Thomas, who volunteer as Foster Grandparents at Woodland Park Magnet School in Hammond.
