Surprise visitors

The Old State Capitol recently had some interesting visitors. Last weekend Ji mmy Stanley, in town playing with the band Odd Men Out at the Blues Festival, popped in for a quick hello and to check out his great-great grandfather Will Strong’s former office. Strong served as secretary of state from 1877 to 1884.

Earlier, 90-something Betty Toepfer, whose father was the groundskeeper of the Old State Capitol, came to call. She actually lived in the “castle” from 1941-47 and shared lots of stories with OSC staff, including how the family secretly housed soldiers on the fourth floor as a favor to the military.
