I hope you enjoyed your Labor Day vacation. It was nice to have one last fling before the hustle and bustle of fall heats up. Two fun events are planned in the Capital City on Thursday night, including the granddaddy of all chefs’ events — Cancer Services 33rd annual Capital Chefs’ Showcase. The gastronomic celebration gets underway at 6:30 p.m. at the River Center. For tickets, log on to cancerservices.org.

Next door at the Old State Capitol, Opéra Louisiane opens its 2015-2016 season with “Baritones on the Bayou” featuring Mark Walters, Todd Thomas, Dennis Jesse and Ivan Griffin. Joining them is soprano Rachel Cobb. The performance begins at 7:30 p.m. but is preceded by a reception. For tickets, log on to operalouisiane.com.
