The all-brick home at 2036 Old Carriage Lane is one of those homes that never goes out of style. It’s a timeless Old New Orleans design with wrought iron balconies and lots of Southern style.
It’s the first house on the left on Old Carriage Lane, one of those small developments with exclusive homes off Old Hammond Highway near Jefferson. The brick masons were kept busy with this residence; nearly every foot of the exterior and a great deal of the flooring inside is antique brick, giving the home a warm, inviting atmosphere.
The home’s private outdoor spaces are inviting as well. There’s a covered porch, an elevated wood deck and a brick-floored outdoor living room, all inside a tall privacy fence that surrounds the back yard.
Inside the home, oak planks and Old St. Louis bricks are the two primary materials for floors. The formal dining room has nice wood windows at each end, adding lots of natural light to complement the 12-light chandelier. An old-time swinging door leads into a cozy breakfast cove near the kitchen.
The kitchen has 3cm granite on counters and the center island, which has a four-burner electric stove. A microwave-over-oven combo is in a nearby wall, not far from a Kenmore Elite refrigerator. Travertine backsplashes are installed below freshly-painted cabinetry.
Just down a short hall from the kitchen are the home’s large laundry, a half bath and the exit to the home’s two-car garage.
The family room is at the center of the house, and is divided into two main gathering spaces. One is in front of a corner masonry fireplace and the other is by a wall of unique built-ins.
A wide brick breezeway separates the living quarters of the home from the entertaining areas. The master and guest suites are in this wing, and two more bedrooms are upstairs. A custom staircase to the second floor is located in the breezeway, which is framed by stained cased openings. French doors open into one of the private courtyards.
The master bedroom, floored in oak planks, has French doors and windows to the courtyard, the same one accessible from the family room. In the master bath, quartz is used to top dual vanities with custom mirrors. A 6-foot soaker tub is along the wall opposite the vanities, and a frameless glass shower is at one end of the bath.
Up the custom staircase, meanwhile, the landing could be used as a small library or a sitting room. Two bedrooms up here share a full bath. The front bedroom has an exit to the New Orleans style wrought iron balcony that overlooks the front courtyard.
Finally, the outdoor spaces out back have separate intimate seating areas, some under roof and some under the stars. It’s a great – and private – setting for entertaining.
