“Unique” isn’t a strong enough word to describe the home at the corner of South Lakeshore Drive and Stanford Avenue. Most of the materials in the home are reclaimed from plantations and farms, no two interior doors are the same, and the outdoor spaces are spectacular. In short, just about every one of this home’s 7,467 square feet is special in some way.

South Lakeshore Drive is already one of the most exclusive addresses in town, and 648 South Lakeshore takes its exclusivity to the next level. The home and a 900-square-foot guest house wrap around a lush tropical courtyard with a lap pool, a relaxation pool and a pebbled sunbathing deck.

The home has three stories, plus a 1061-square-foot basement where guests can have a home theater experience while luxuriating in a hot tub. The basement is below the living room, accessed via a hidden spiral staircase in the living room. Also down in the basement is a 700-bottle wine cooler, large enough for a seated dinner. Small windows in the basement wall allow views of the swimming pool above.

No two interior doors in the home are alike, and nearly everything in the home is reclaimed from other buildings in the South. Kitchen cabinets were made from furniture pieces, and both kitchen sinks are custom copper. There’s a full-size freezer and a full-size refrigerator, both SubZeros. A 6-burner gas Wolf cooking system with a griddle is in the island, which is topped by 3cm granite.

Lots of antique painted beaded board is used in the ceilings, and massive antique beams are everywhere.

The residence is divided into three buildings connected by loggias. The main home has two bedrooms, a kids’ wing on the south end of the house has four bedrooms, and the guest house has a single bedroom atop a spiral staircase. Neither the basement nor the guest house are included in the home’s listed 7,467 square feet.

The bedrooms in the kids’ wing of the home have lofts with access to a game room. A fabulous slate-floored loggia leads from the kids’ wing over to the main part of house. Massive sliding glass doors open along the loggia, exposing the length of the lap pool.

More sliding glass walls are in the living room, these opening to the relaxation area of the pool. Underwater bar stools are at pool’s edge, not far from a fountain with a center jetted gas fire pit. Another fire pit is in a sitting area nearby, and a 16-foot projector screen drops from a wall near the pool for movies or ball games. If there’s a more unique and exciting entertaining concept locally, I haven’t seen it.

The master suite is on the second floor of the main house and has a large sitting area with a fireplace. The master bedroom accesses two balconies and a sun porch, all overlooking the pool courtyard. The master bath is uniquely incorporated into the master bedroom, with a 6-foot whirlpool tub flanked by columns. A wide pass-through shower with a pebbled floor has seven separate water sources. Towel warmers and heated floors add to the luxury.

Finally, up on the third floor is a big home gymnasium with access to a wide sun deck above the treetops.
