The LSU AgCenter’s Botanic Gardens at Burden, 4560 Essen Lane, will be having a poinsettia display and sale at the gardens from 8 a.m. to noon on Dec. 5. The public can see the latest varieties of poinsettia available and vote on favorites, and more than 1,000 plants will be available for sale ranging from $8 to $12.
All proceeds from the sale will go to research and expansion of the gardens.
The Rural Life Museum at Burden, just down the drive from the gardens, at the same address, will bring visitors a true 19th Century Louisiana Christmas experience on Dec. 7 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Musical groups, artisans demonstrating their crafts, storytellers and costumed re-enactors will be on site. This event will conclude with a bonfire and a visit from Papa Noël. Decorations with natural trimmings representative of the period will be displayed throughout the museum’s grounds. Admission is $9 for ages 11 to 61, $8 seniors 62 years and above, and free to children 10 and younger.
Book page ornaments
Teens, get ready for the holidays by making ornaments out of recycled book pages Dec. 2 from 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Bluebonnet Branch of the East Baton Rouge Public Library. The class will be held in Meeting Room No. 1. For more information, call (225) 762-2260.
Mrs. Claus is coming
Christmas isn’t far away and Santa is busy with his elves at the North Pole. To help him out Mrs. Claus and the Holiday Clown will visit each library branch during December. She will be at the Bluebonnet Regional library branch on Dec. 3 at 10 a.m.
Lap pool closed
The lap pool at the Paula G. Manship YMCA will be closed for maintenance starting Nov. 28. Check the website for updates on reopening.
The Horticultural Society presents Reflections in the Garden on Dec. 1 from 11:30 to noon at the Burden Conference Center. Reflections is a monthly lecture series about seasonal topics pertinent to gardening in Baton Rouge. This week, Gina Periou with Birds Unlimited will speak starting at noon. Registration begins at 11:30 a.m. Admission is $10, free to members. Bring a lunch, drinks are provided.
