Flights leaving and arriving Tuesday night at Baton Rouge Metro Airport are being delayed after a fire in an electrical junction box knocked out power to the commercial runway lights, said airport spokesman Bill Profita.

The general aviation runway lights were not affected, he said.

The airport’s fire department extinguished the blaze shortly after it erupted at 7:40 p.m., Profita said, and crews are working to restore power. He said shortly before 8 p.m. that power should be restored within the hour.

A departing American Airlines flight is being held at the gate, he said. Four arriving flights also are being delayed, at their hubs, until the power is restored, he said.

“You can’t have aircraft (arriving or departing) at night without runway lights,” Profita said.
