HAMMOND, La. (AP) — An inmate from the Tangipahoa Parish Jail enjoyed a couple of days of freedom before being returned to custody early Monday in Mississippi.

The Daily Star reports Russell Rand, Jr., a burglary suspect, escaped from custody while at Lallie Kemp Medical Center in Independence late Friday. He had received treatment for an injured knee.

Rand was caught in McComb and was booked with an additional charge of simple escape.

Sheriff’s office spokeswoman Dawn Panepinto said Rand was able to escape deputies’ custody while he was about to be driven back to the jail from the emergency unit at Lallie Kemp. She did not specify how he escaped.

Panepinto says three others were also arrested and booked with assisting escape and accessory after the fact.
