Blue Star Mothers of Louisiana Chapter 1 in Baton Rouge planted 11,000 American flags between Huey Long’s grave and the State Capitol for Memorial Day.
Each flag represents a military person from Louisiana who died in service during war, said Janet Broussard, of Prairieville, an organizer of the annual event.
An additional 214 flags will be added by the Gold Star Mothers to account for the Louisiana residents who were killed while serving in the military during national conflicts from the 9-11 terrorist attacks through today. The flag-planting event begins at 10 a.m. Saturday, she said.
At 6 p.m. Monday, Memorial Day, taps will be played and the flags will be taken down.
