The St. Jude School Cougars cheerleading squad won accolades and awards during its week at a Universal Cheerleaders Association camp in June.
The team received a superior placement ribbon for daily squad evaluations, won the spirit stick on a daily basis and picked up the prized UCA Team Banana on the first day of camp, honoring the most spirited and unified squad at camp that day, a news release said.
On the final day of camp, the girls competed against schools from their diocese and surrounding parishes. The squad won first place in camp cheer with stunts, first place in overall “Game Day” performance of a squad and second place in Extreme Routine dance competition.
Sophie Martin and Kate Duhe made it to the final round of the entire camp jump-off. Duhe was crowned Queen Camp Jumper with the best toe touch and optional jump.
Duhe, captain Maggi Barksdale and co-captains Mary Claire Saia and Emma Hidalgo were named All-American Cheerleaders, giving them an opportunity to march and perform in the Houston Thanksgiving Day Parade.
St. Jude also picked up the UCA team leadership award, based on votes from all campers in attendance.
The squad is coached by Andree Hidalgo.
