Two hikers who got lost Wednesday in the Tunica Hills Wildlife Management Area northwest of St. Francisville were rescued early Thursday by West Feliciana Parish sheriff’s deputies.
Stefan Domingue, 20, of Lafayette, and Rachel Buchta, 22, of Scott, called 911 soon after sunset after veering off a trail to view a dry creek bed and getting lost, Erin Foster, a spokeswoman for the Sheriff’s Office, said in a news release.
The Sheriff’s Crisis Response Team, searching on foot and with an all-terrain vehicle, located the hikers’ car around 10 p.m. at a trailhead near Old Tunica Road. About six hours later, the searchers located the hikers near Como Road, Foster said.
“This is an example of what can happen to inexperienced hikers who venture into the area without proper gear and without a plan,” Lt. Brian Spillman, commander of the response team, said in the release. “Luckily, we were able to get them out without injury.”
