Caroline Matthews, the daughter of Fred and Anne Matthews, is the recipient of a Sam S. Politz Scholarship from Associated Grocers.
Hanna Ott, of Lafayette, also received a scholarship.
The scholarship is valued at $1,000 per semester for eight semesters and is awarded to graduating high school students who meet all the required criteria.
Matthews ranked first in her graduating class of 265 at St. Joseph Academy, where she held a 4.655 GPA. Her awards while at the school include an academic letter for achieving a 3.5 GPA; SJA Service Award; Advanced Placement scholar with honor; first place in the mathematics category in the SJA Science Fair; and Taylor Awards Program scholar.
She was active in many clubs at St. Joseph and participates in Miracle League, Volunteers of America Oak Park Plaza, Vacation Bible School at Most Blessed Sacrament, Cypress Springs Mercedarian Prayer Center, Battered Women’s Shelter, VOA Parker House, CASA Barry House and Baton Rouge Wheelchair Tennis Association.
Matthews will be attending Southern Methodist University in Dallas this fall, where she has been accepted into the business scholars program, the University Honors Program and the Pre-law Scholars Program, a news release said.
