Marshall Pentes, a sixth-grader at Runnels Elementary School, took third-place honors in the Louisiana Children’s Discovery Center’s State Regional Spelling Bee held March 7 at Southeastern Louisiana University in Hammond.
Marshall competed against 102 contestants from public and private schools in Tangipahoa, East Baton Rouge, Livingston, St. Helena, Iberville and Avoyelles parishes, a news release from the school said.
For his third-place finish, Marshall was presented with a trophy. All spelling bee participants received medals and gift passes to the Louisiana Children’s Discovery Center.
A member of the Spelling Club at Runnels, Marshall qualified to represent his school at the regional competition through a series of spelling bees and written tests held at club meetings.
Also in the Runnels Spelling Club are Caroline Collins, Brayden Hebert, Ian Duke, Thomas Worsham and Carson Badinger. Club sponsors are Colleen LeBlanc and Lisa Haller.
