ST. FRANCISVILLE — A jury of five men and seven women began deliberations Saturday night in the first-degree murder trial of Angola inmate Robert G. Carley.

Carley and four other inmates were accused in the stabbing and beating death of security officer David C. Knapps during an escape attempt on Dec. 28, 1999.

Carley is now serving a life sentence in the Louisiana State Penitentiary at Angola for second-degree murder for the October 1987 slaying of a St. Bernard Parish gasoline station attendant.
