GONZALES — An Ascension Parish man faces up to 20 years in prison after he pleaded guilty this week to molesting a teenage girl nearly three years ago, prosecutors said.
Wilbert L. Glover, 53, also known as Wilbert Payne, was accused of sexually assaulting the girl in late 2014, prosecutors with the 23rd Judicial District said in a news release.
Ascension Parish sheriff's deputies arrested and booked him on a count of molestation of a juvenile by force or control Dec. 31, 2014.
A grand jury on Nov. 18, 2016, indicted Glover, 14496 Oak Meadow St., Gonzales, on first-degree rape in the case, but he later entered into a plea deal on the lesser charge
Tyler Cavalier, spokesman for 23rd Judicial District Attorney's Office, said Friday that prosecutors agreed to the lesser sentence.
"We did what we felt was in the best interests of the child," he said.
Glover remained Friday in Ascension Parish Prison near Donaldsonville on bail of $200,000, online jail records say. Judge Turner deferred sentencing until 9:30 a.m. Jan. 17, so a pre-sentence investigation can be conducted.
