Walk with a Doc, a new program through a partnership of BREC, Capital Area Medical Society and the Louisiana State Medical Society, launches at 9 a.m. Saturday at Perkins Road Community Park, 7122 Perkins Road.
The program will continue throughout the year at multiple BREC parks throughout East Baton Rouge Parish.
Walk with a Doc was created by Dr. David Sabgir, a board-certified cardiologist at Mount Carmel Clinical Cardiovascular Specialists. The physician-led walking program works to bring the benefits of regular exercise, healthy nutrition and medical information to the general population in a fun manner for all ages, a news release said. Each free, local walk is hosted by a physician to provide patients with the health benefits of walking, while talking with doctors.
“What I love about this program is that doctors across our community are not just encouraging their patients to get out and exercise, they will be leading the way and providing and educational experience as well. This is a real game-changer for East Baton Rouge Parish,” BREC Superintendent Carolyn McKnight said.
Prior to each walk, participants may receive nutrition/health lifestyle education through brief presentations, blood pressure checks, conversation with the doctor and other health team members and informational handouts, the release said.
