We make no secret of our affection for the U.S. Constitution’s First Amendment, which guarantees freedom of the press, among other things. The wording of the amendment is displayed in the lobby of The Advocate’s offices at 7290 Bluebonnet Blvd. We hope that many of our visitors take the time to read the display as they walk by.
Just in time for the Fourth of July, USA Today and the nonprofit First Amendment Center have teamed up to create the First Amendment Quiz, a brief, 20-question test that readers can take online at http://1forall.us/.
The First Amendment guarantees free expression for all Americans, but only 6 percent of Americans know what it says, according to recent First Amendment Center surveys.
The First Amendment guarantees more than freedom of the press. The amendment also protects freedom of religion, speech, assembly and the freedom to petition government.
These are freedoms to hold dear on the Fourth of July, and every day of the year. We urge readers to take the First Amendment quiz, and test their knowledge of a great instrument of national liberty.
