Most middle and high schools start the school day too early, according to a study published by the Center for Disease Control.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report details about 40,000 public middle and high schools started school before the recommened start time at 8:30 a.m. in the 2011-2012 school year.

According to the study, the average school start time was 8:03 a.m. Louisiana had the earliest average start time at 7:40 a.m.

Schools who hit the 8:30 a.m. recommened start time gave students time to get the target amount of sleep for adolescents, 8.5 to 9.5 hours a night.
