ExxonMobil’s Baton Rouge Chemical Plant on Scenic Highway will begin maintenance on one of its operating units Tuesday, which will cause visible flaring, according to a news release.

The flaring is not an emergency and is a safe procedure that will “burn virtually all the hydrocarbons that cannot be processed during a unit shutdown, slowdown or restart,” ExxonMobil spokeswoman Lana Sonnier Venable said in the news release.

The heaviest flaring is expected between 6 a.m. and 11 a.m., Venable said.
