Under the gun from a flurry of high-profile land annexations by the City of Baton Rouge, the petition was filed after the required 17,746 signatures, or 25% of voters, were collected, but efforts to gain signatures will continue with hopes of reaching 20,000 signatures.

An estimated 18,000 people signed a petition seeking an election to incorporate the proposed city of St. George — but in the past few months, some of those people had a change of heart.

On Monday, the Registrar of Voters’ Office said it was about 70 percent done validating the petition and had already tossed about 13 percent of the signatures because they were determined to be invalid.
