NAPOLEONVILLE — An Assumption Parish man has been sentenced to six years in prison after he pleaded guilty this week to twice having sex with a 13-year-old girl last year, prosecutors said Thursday.
James Viscardis Jr., 22, pleaded guilty to one count of felony carnal knowledge of a juvenile and as part of the plea, admitted to taking the girl to a vacant apartment between July 1 and Aug. 8, 2016, for the sexual encounters and to touching her inappropriately, prosecutors said in a statement.
Assumption Parish sheriff's deputies began investigating sexual assault allegations against Viscardis after a complaint was filed Aug. 18 and arrested him the same day on multiple counts, including sexual battery and forcible rape, according to prosecutors and online jail records.
Tyler Cavalier, spokesman for 23rd Judicial District Attorney Ricky Babin, said Viscardis, 107 Honey Lane, Morgan City, was later charged with two counts: second-degree rape and indecent behavior with a juvenile.
Viscardis agreed Monday at the parish Courthouse in Napoleonville to the reduced charge of felony carnal knowledge of a juvenile as part of a plea agreement with Assistant District Attorney Thomas Daigle, who prosecuted the case, Cavalier said.
Honey Lane is in the Bayou L'Ourse area of southern Assumption Parish, despite the mailing address in Morgan City, which is in another parish.
In addition to the six-year sentence, Judge Thomas Kliebert Jr. of the 23rd Judicial District Court also ordered Viscardis to register as a sex offender upon his release, prosecutors added.
