East Feliciana public schools, Slaughter Community Charter School and Silliman Institute will be closed on Tuesday due to cold weather, a parish official announced Monday night.

The closures come as the National Weather Service issued a freezing rain advisory that included East Feliciana, West Feliciana and Pointe Coupee parishes, in effect from 9 p.m. Monday until 9 a.m. Tuesday.

Classes will resume on Wednesday, East Feliciana Parish School Superintendent Henderson Lewis said in a letter to parents posted on the school system’s website.

Schools in West Feliciana Parish will remain open, according to the school system’s website.

Hollis Milton, the district’s superintendent, said school officials will monitor the weather, and if conditions change, parents and students will be notified via email, automated call-out system, the district’s website and local television stations.

“At the present time, we will have school tomorrow unless you are notified that icy conditions tomorrow morning make transportation hazardous,” Milton wrote in a letter posted on the district’s website.

Pointe Coupee Parish public schools had already canceled classes for a day of teachers’ meetings, but those teachers are still scheduled to come in at 10 a.m., said Linda D’Amico, the parish’s superintendent.
