High school coaches and teams representing their schools will battle in a fun, friendly field-day competition including tug-of-war, a wheelbarrow race and an obstacle course.

The next Capital Area CASA Association court-appointed special advocate volunteer training course begins Sept. 8.
Orientation sessions last 45 minutes and will be held at 10 a.m. Aug. 15 and Sept. 19; noon Aug. 31, Sept. 4 and Sept. 30; 3 p.m. Aug. 27; and 5 p.m. Aug. 18 and Sept. 22.
CASA volunteers help abused children reach safe, permanent homes. No special background is required to become a volunteer. All volunteers must attend orientation and go through a screening process prior to training.
Bluebonnet Crochet Corner
Adults and teens can learn to crochet a sun hat from 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday at the Bluebonnet Regional Branch Library, 9200 Bluebonnet Blvd. All experience levels are welcome. Participants should bring a crochet hook at least 6 mm (size J) or smaller. Limited supplies will be available, but participants are welcome to bring their own. Civil War medicine
Centenary State Historic Site Ranger John O’Neill will talk to children about methods and instruments used by Civil War doctors from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Saturday in the Storytime Room at the Bluebonnet Regional Branch Library. Teens can make bookmarks out of buttons in the Bluebonnet Regional Branch Library meeting room 1 from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday. All materials will be provided.

Celebrate the end of the summer with a back-to-school barbecue and pool party from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 22, at the Paula G. Manship YMCA’s teen pool, 8100 YMCA Plaza Drive.
Enjoy ice pops, hamburgers, hot dogs and music by the pool, and don’t forget your swimsuit. YMCA members get in free; the fee is $10 for non-members.
