Two Baton Rouge men were indicted in the May 1 shooting death of a 29-year-old man in a parking lot on La Annie Drive.

Demond Bessie, 23, 5822 N. Sunset Ave., and Steaphon S. Harris, 25, 1387 Harco Drive, were charged Wednesday by an East Baton Rouge Parish grand jury with second-degree murder in the slaying of Elbert Marshall.

Bessie also was arrested in the July 9 robbery and killing of Major Brown, 29, outside Brown’s Cate Avenue home.

Bessie was arrested July 31 in Marshall’s death and Aug. 14 in Brown’s.

Police have accused Harris of arranging the murder of Marshall. An arrest warrant states that Harris told several people prior to the shooting that he was going to set Marshall up.

A second-degree murder conviction carries an automatic sentence of life in prison.

The case involving Marshall’s killing has been assigned to state District Judge Lou Daniel.
