Burden to host picnic with food, music _lowres

Photo by RICK BOGREN – A good resolution for the new year is to visit a public garden, like the LSU AgCenter Botanic Garden at Burden, once a month to llearn which plants are in bloom at different times of the year.

The LSU AgCenter Botanic Gardens at Burden has rescheduled its Picnic at The Pavilion event to Aug. 28., said Center Director Jeff Kuehny.

The event, which starts at 6 p.m., will include music for the adults, games and entertainment for the children, and barbecue provided by the Culinard Culinary Institute at Virginia College in Baton Rouge.

Patrons are encouraged to bring a picnic blanket, utensils and their families, Kuehny said. “We want to make this event a fun, family-style picnic without all the trouble of packing a lunch,” he said.

For the $20 ticket price, the center will provide a menu including slow smoked beef brisket, chicken quarters, house made sausages, summer vegetable pasta salad, roasted corn on the cob, baked beans, sweet corn muffins, watermelon and beer and wine.

Tickets for children 4 to 10 are $10 each, and children 3 and under are free.

Kuehny also said the price will include live music by Destiny Manzella and Kenny Acosta.

Lawn games like badminton will be offered, he said, along with water games for children.

Tickets are still available at the LSU AgCenter Botanic Gardens, 4560 Essen Lane, or online at Eventbrite.com.

The event is a fundraiser for the AgCenter and its educational programs, Kuehny said.
