ABBEVILLE — A 54-year-old woman living in a storage shed died Saturday in a fire that destroyed the structure, the state Fire Marshal’s Office reported.

The Abbeville Fire Department was dispatched shortly after 11:53 a.m. to 10634 La. 167 after a Vermillion Parish sheriff’s deputy discovered the fire, state Fire Marshal Butch Browning said in a news release.

When firefighters arrived, they found the 12-by-16-foot storage shed still burning, Browning said.

Firefighters found the body of Marilyn Durke after extinguishing the blaze, Browning said. Durke was pronounced dead at the scene.

Durke appeared to be using the shed as a bedroom, Browning said.

The shed was not in compliance with any residential building codes, Browning said, and electrical services appeared to be deficient.

No smoke alarms were in use, the fire marshal added.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation and the Vermillion Parish Sheriff’s Office was also assisting in the investigation, Browning said.
