Baton Rouge park officials have introduced a new program to loan bikes to seniors for free.

During Silver Spokes events, BREC will provide helmets, six bicycles and six tricycles to participants.

Events began March 16 and have been scheduled through the spring.

Beginning-level rides teach balance and safety, while other rides will be lengthier and offer a more rigorous workout.

While all ages may participate, BREC has designed Silver Spokes for seniors, writing in a news release that it offers “a gentle, low-impact, safe and efficient workout.”

Some group rides tour local parks, while others ride around the city or Tickfaw State Park. Officials also are planning a senior run and ride event with an entry fee sometime in July, though all other rides are free.

A list of events is available at brec.org/outdooradventure or by calling (225) 272-9200, ext. 542. Preregistration is encouraged, and participants are urged to bring water, sunscreen and a hat.
