The sixth annual Louisiana Small Farmers Conference will be held Thursday through Saturday at the Southern University Agricultural Research and Extension Center. This year’s theme is “Ownership and Growth of Louisiana’s Small Family Farms.”

New and beginning farmers, small and urban famers, agricultural business owners, community leaders, backyard gardeners and community-based organizations are encouraged to attend.

The conference starts at 10 a.m. and includes a risk management and networking session; a panel discussion with USDA agencies; the Louisiana Living Legends Banquet, which honors individuals who have made significant contributions to Southern University in the areas of agriculture, family and consumer sciences; and the first session of the 2016 class of the Louisiana Small Farmer Agricultural Leadership Institute.

Topics to be covered include soil health, keeping the farm in the family, financing your farm, managing the farm as a business, opportunities for market gardeners, best management practices for a beef cattle operation and mitigating agricultural risk on your farm.
