HOUMA — Three children died in an early Christmas morning mobile home fire that left their father with serious burns.
Mike Delaune of the state Fire Marshal’s Office said a 12-year-old girl, an 11-year-old boy and a 9-year old boy died in the fire at the Whispering Oaks Trailer Park.
The children’s father rescued one child, who survived, but was unable to get the other three.
“The fire was so quick, he just couldn’t get to them,” Houma Fire Inspector Mike Millet said.
The father was taken to a local hospital and then to a burn unit at a Baton Rouge hospital with serious burns on his arms.
The Courier of Houma reported the fire was called in by neighbors about 1:30 a.m. Wednesday. Millet said the trailer was engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived.
Investigators haven’t determined the fire’s cause.
Eight people were inside the trailer because the children and their parents were visiting from Alabama for Christmas, Millet said. No other occupants were injured. Authorities aren’t releasing the names of any of the occupants.
The fire destroyed two cars and a shed, and a neighboring mobile home sustained heat damage.
