The body of a 28-year-old Baton Rouge man who disappeared underwater in the Amite River Diversion Canal in an apparent boating accident on Sunday night was found early Monday, according to the Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Office.

Office spokesperson Allison Hudson said the body of Matthew Green was found around 2:30 a.m.

Green disappeared under water near the weir in the canal around 7 p.m. Sunday after falling in and apparently hitting the propeller of a boat he was trying to climb into, said Lt. Col. Bobby Webre, a Sheriff’s Office spokesman.

He was riding a sit-down watercraft at idle speed alongside a small aluminum boat when the accident happened, Webre said.

Green was trying to switch positions with another man who was piloting the boat, Webre said.

As Green scooted back on the sit-down watercraft and tried to jump into the boat, Webre said, he slipped and hit the boat’s throttle, causing it to accelerate.

As Green fell into the water, witnesses reported to authorities, it appeared his head struck the boat’s propeller.

The man who was piloting the boat, who was not identified, was not injured in the incident, Webre said.

The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries is the lead agency in the investigation.
