Runnels School recently received a $2,000 grant from the Staples Foundation, the private charitable arm of Staples Inc.
The award, from the foundation’s “2 Million & Change” program, will be used to fund the purchase of five HoverCams — desktop document cameras — for first-grade classrooms.
Michael Smith, a facilities supplies account executive at Staples and a 1998 Runnels alumnus, nominated the school to receive the grant. He is married to elementary teacher Stacey Lerma Smith, also a 1998 Runnels graduate. The Smiths have two children attending Runnels.
The grant is part of a philanthropic initiative created by Staples Foundation that allows Staples associates around the world to direct funding to nonprofit organizations that are focused on education or job skills, a news release said.
