Runnels School senior Irene Lewis received the 2016-17 P.E.O. Star Scholarship, presented by Runnels Junior/Senior High Assistant Principal Dana Schlotterer, during the school’s graduation ceremony on May 12 in the Gladys Hague Runnels Theatre.

P.E.O. Chapter W, of Baton Rouge, recommended Lewis for the scholarship. She has been accepted at the Honors College at Southern University where she plans to study plant and soil science, a news release said.

Her parents are Maura Jane and Eric B. Lewis.

Scholarship candidates are chosen for excellence in leadership and academics, participation in extracurricular activities and community service, and potential for future success, the release said.

The P.E.O. Sisterhood is an international philanthropic and educational organization that promotes increased educational opportunities for women, the release said.
