Jesse Romero lost his chance to become the next “MasterChef” when, in somewhat of a surprise twist, judge Gordon Ramsey kicked the Baton Rouge cook off the show.
In a challenge to elevate a Salisbury steak, broccoli and macaroni-and-cheese TV dinner, the judge did not like Romero’s venison interpretation, calling it dry, almost like sand.
However, while Romero’s dish was in the bottom three, the judges first sent home Veronica Cili, making it seem Romero was safe. With about a minute left in the show, Ramsey, after asking the top 15 to applaud themselves, announced the list would be cut to 14.
Telling Romero that at times he acted like a “petulant teenager,” Ramsey told him to leave his apron behind and hit the road.
Romero proved a class act in his farewell, saying he made close friends on the show and got to cook in front of three wonderful chefs.
“I’ll just keep working, you know, keep working on becoming a better chef, and, hopefully, I’ll open up a restaurant and fulfill my dreams. I hope I made my family proud. Most of all I just want to wish everybody that’s still cooking, ‘Good luck,’ guys. Don’t overcook your venison,” he said, flashing a big smile.
