A barge struck the U.S. Highway 190 Bridge in Baton Rouge late Thursday, but inspectors determined the bridge was sound and there was no reason to close the bridge, the East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office reported Friday morning in a tweet.

The incident occurred around 9:00 p.m. The Sheriff’s Office Marine Division deputies immediately took inspectors from the Department of Transportation and Development to the scene, using the office’s patrol boat.

The inspection by DOTD insured the bridge structure was sound and prevented any unnecessary bridge closures, the Sheriff’s Office said.
