Attorney Heidi Vessel narrowly defeated Elecia “Lisa” Lathon on Saturday night for the Zachary School Board District 6 seat.

Vessel, a 45-year-old Democrat, won 51.35 percent of the vote and slid to victory with just a 22-vote lead ahead of Lathon, who finished with 48.65 percent of the vote, according to complete but unofficial returns.

Vessel has applauded Zachary’s school system, saying its has attracted residents and businesses to the area. But she has said state cuts to education funding have called for the school board to act more creatively to avoid slashing programs or swelling class sizes.

“Everybody’s property values are higher because they pay taxes to fund schools, and the schools are really good, so the property values went up,” Vessel previously told The Advocate. “And when people relocate to Louisiana for jobs, they look for where their kids can get the best education. That causes the community to grow.”
