LSU cheerleader Kip Carter is hospitalized after being injured in a hit and run early Sunday on River Road south of Brightside Drive, authorities said.

Carter was walking with a group of friends at about 2:50 a.m. in the 5900 block of River Road when he was hit by a Chevrolet Suburban, said Baton Rouge police spokesman Sgt. Don Stone.

The driver of the suburban did not stop, Stone said.

When officers arrived on scene, Carter was bleeding from the head and was taken to a local hospital where he is in stable condition, Stone added.

LSU spokesman Herb Vincent said Carter is a sophomore at LSU and has been a cheerleader with the university for the past two years.
