The Runnels Junior Beta Club picked up top awards in three categories at the annual 2015 Junior Beta District Rally at McKinley Middle Academic Magnet on Nov. 21.
James Power, Margaret Campbell, Aidan Matthews, Omid Badawi and Robby Harrison won first place in the Tower of Power, which challenges teams to build a structure out of drinking straws and tape in 15 minutes. The group producing the tallest structure capable of holding a tennis ball aloft for 60 seconds wins, a news release said.
Sixth-grader Abby Robbins placed second in Special Talent with her solo performance of “Part of Your World” from Disney’s “The Little Mermaid.”
In the Songfest competition, Natalia Tooraen, Savannah McNeal, Anna Manning, Joshua Freeman, Taylor Koontz, Janie Schlotterer, Kissa Nicholas-Whitt and Sarah Stanfield wrote and performed a song, with choreography they arranged, based on the rally’s theme, “Let the Beta Times Roll.”
Tower of Power and Special Talent winners will advance to state competition at the Junior Beta State Convention in Lafayette in February.
Club sponsors at Runnels are Christine Pousson, John Baird and Caroline Hader.
