Bishop Robert W. Muench of the Diocese of Baton Rouge underwent successful surgery Tuesday to reverse an irregular heartbeat, the Catholic Diocese of Baton Rouge announced in an email sent by media liaison Donna Carville.
In the email, the Rev. Than Vu, vicar general of the Diocese, reported that the bishop’s “procedure went well.”
Vu, who has assumed diocesan management during the bishop’s recuperation, said surgeons indicated everything went “just as planned.” He thanked everyone for their prayers for the bishop.
Muench announced at Mass on Sunday that he was to undergo two separate surgeries in the coming weeks. The second procedure, to remove a parathyroid gland with a benign nodule, is scheduled for June 17.
