Runnels High School students Anna Morgan and Nicholas Saunders have been named semifinalists in the 2016 National Merit Scholarship Program, a news release said.

Morgan and Saunders will compete for national merit scholarships that will be awarded next spring.

To become a finalist, a student and his or her high school must submit a detailed scholarship application including information about their academic record; participation in school and community activities; demonstrated leadership abilities; employment; and honors and awards received.

Semifinalists must have an outstanding academic record throughout high school, be endorsed and recommended by a high school official, write an essay and earn SAT scores confirming his or her earlier performance on the qualifying test.

The names of national merit finalists will be announced in February. National merit scholarship winners will be announced starting in April.

Morgan has attended Runnels School since the third grade and was named a 2015 national AP scholar. She is the daughter of Norma Marsh and Craig Morgan.

Saunders has been a Runnels student since sixth grade and was named a 2015 AP scholar with honor. He is the son of Paul and Missy Saunders.
