A Baton Rouge man was indicted Thursday in the Aug. 12 shooting death of a 28-year-old man who was visiting the Renaissance Gateway apartment complex to drop off diapers at his girlfriend’s for their three young children.
Eric Johnson, 25, of 1844 Gayosa Ave., now faces a second-degree murder charge in the killing of Kedrick Ricard at the complex just north of Florida Boulevard on North Ardenwood Drive. A conviction on that charge would carry a mandatory sentence of life in prison.
Desmond Jordan, a cousin of Ricard’s girlfriend, has said the victim and other family members were walking along the sidewalk when they heard a couple arguing. Ricard looked at the couple, which did not sit well with the man who was arguing with the woman, Jordan stated. The man arguing with the woman pulled out a handgun, walked behind the group and began firing wildly, he added.
Jordan said his account of what happened came from family members walking with the victim.
The case has been assigned to state District Judge Bonnie Jackson.
