Those flares you may see coming from the ExxonMobil Baton Rouge chemical plant on Scenic Highway are not due to an emergency: They signal the restart of equipment after planned maintenance, an ExxonMobil official says.

“Flares are primarily safety control devices intended to consume excess hydrocarbons during shutdown, start-up and other non-routine activities,” Lana Sonnier Venable, an ExxonMobil Baton Rouge spokesperson, said Monday in a news release.

“We realize flaring may inconvenience our neighbors and we have taken steps to ensure that good emission control practices are implemented,” Venable said.
