Budding poets are urged to submit their original works to Jones Creek Regional Branch Library’s poetry writing contest.

Poets may submit only one entry, which must be at least 20 lines long. Typed copies are due to the Branch Manager’s Office no later than July 10.

Winners will be announced at the Heartune Creations Poetry Workshop on July 17.

Library movie feature

Jones Creek Regional Branch Library will show “The Water Horse: Legend of the Deep” (PG) at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. Friday and 3 p.m. Sunday.

Refreshments will be provided.

Movie in the Park

Disney/Pixar’s “The Good Dinosaur” (PG), is BREC’s Movie in the Park at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Baringer Road Park, 7401 Baringer Road.

Bring your blanket or lawn chair. Popcorn and other concessions will be available for purchase.

Craft time for adults

Need some new accessories for your summer beach trips? Come to Jones Creek Regional Branch Library at 6:30 p.m. Monday to decorate a straw beach hat and make a beach bag from a recycled potato chip bag and duct tape. All materials will be provided.

Kids’ story/craft sessions

A storytime and craft activity for children ages 3 to 7 begins at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at Jones Creek Regional Branch Library. Listen to a reading of “Pete the Cat: I Love My White Shoes,” then make a topsy-turvy cat craft with spinning body parts.

Another story and craft time at 2:30 p.m. Thursday is for ages 6 to 11, featuring the book “I Took the Moon for a Walk” by Carolyn Curtis. Afterward, kids will make a fun hanging mobile with stars, a sun and a moon.

Container gardening

Learn how to grow a high-yield, low-maintenance garden in containers with Clyde Sandifer at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at Jones Creek Regional Branch Library.

Father/daughter dance

Put on your dancing shoes for BREC’s annual father/daughter dance at 6:30 p.m. June 18 in the banquet room at Independence Community Park.

Girls of all ages are invited, along with their fathers or favorite gentlemen. The evening includes music, dancing, food, games and photo opportunities.
